I got into a disagreement with a NB1 Miata owner on a forum. Basically, he hated on the NB2 (my generation) and in my post I said I disagreed with him and gave my points on why I like the NB2 more after test-driving some NB1s. He came back saying I was wrong. I replied with the classical “Yeah, well, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.”
...and I told him if he wants to be rude like that, then he can get side-swiped by a bro truck .
I don’t care if I get banned or not, I’m just gonna avoid the NB forum for a week. It’s a guilty pleasure rattling the cages of middle-aged guys with inflated egos on the Miata forums.

Also, what is as a NB1? Isn’t it NA1?

NB1 is the first three years of the second-generation Miata, ‘98-’00. Its evolution, the NB2 lasted from ‘01 to ‘05.

Nah, I have no grudges against NAs, they’re fun to drive (headlights go up, down, up, down, updownupdownupdownupdownupdownup...) and they pull off the retro vibes well. It’s just fun trolling arrogant NB1 owners who refuse to accept that it is inferior to the later NB2 in any way, shape, or form.

It’s not like you’re wrong. NB2>NB1 for the headlights alone, not to mention VVT and other stuff.

Exactly, and that guy was bitching about all the positive changes that came in the NB2.

The NB1 is better for ES Autocross class if you have a Torsen. Less weight, almost the same amount of power, and really about the same. For a DD, I would say an NB1 could be better, unless you got 99 10 AE or 2000 SE, which would be nearly identical as well.

There is, we just didn’t get it states-side until ‘99 due to legal issues if I’m remembering things correctly. Also, while they’re ‘99 by model year, they are several thousand with build dates going back to ‘98.

You’re right, the NB1 is indeed the more competitive ES car, especially the base model ‘99 with the sport package. However, I think the NB2's seats, console, and projector headlights make it a better DD car. Granted, 2 of the 3 could easily be installed in a NB1.

The projector lights are nice because of easy HID upgrades, but otherwise aren't any better at night. The seats are a bit better in the NB2, but like you said, easy to convert everything over.

I think the NB2 about the same power-wise with the NB1, the difference is where the power is made, but it does make more power than any stock NA. NB1s make their power on the mid to high-range thanks to their trick intake manifold design that has valves to change the airflow from short to long intake runners. NB2s make their power in the low to mid-range because of their VVT system. It’s really noticeable in Spec Miata as NB2s will get a faster launch out of corners but get reeled in by NB1s on the long straightaways.
That said, if you update the NB2 with stock, non-USDM intake manifold, cams, header, and throttle body, then you will make about 10-15hp more than a NB1 with a 500 rpm higher redline along with a lot more high-end power.

I didn’t think there were any outside of the US for the 1998 model year. If I remember correctly, the reason there aren't any 98 model year Miatas is because they had to shut down the factory to update the tooling for the NB. There might be a small number with a 98 build date, but to my knowledge there aren't any true 98 model year Miatas.

You should wish no harm to any miata! If you clarify, and say, I hope your other DD (which hopefully is a G35 or similar) is sideswiped while parked, sure, but no miata!!!!!
Arguing over which year miata is better is like arguing which Victoria Secret model is best.
But seriously, once you start modifying them into track cars, the differences mean almost nothing (other than the VVT).
Plus, your argument is invalid. NA FTWWWWWWW!!

My NB2 is my one and only car; my DD when I was in college, my autocross entry, and my mountain shenanigans car. I’ll eventually get another car to take over DD duties but for now the Miata is doing just fine its role.
It wasn’t really an argument, but is started as a debate in which the NB1 owner got salty so I just about told him to go fuck himself if he wants to be a dick about it.
NAs are the purest Miatas, the NB is just a more usable DD car IMO.

See if you just got an NA, you wouldn’t have to argue about NB1 this and NB2 that.
Nevermind, you’d just get arguments over 1.6 this and 1.8 that.

Former NB1 owner here. What did he think was superior versus your NB2? The only thing the NB1 has over the NB2 is lower compression (if you plan on boosting the car, or just don’t want to pay for 93 octane) and those classy and light 15" wheels found on Sport package cars.

Here’s his post.
OK, the VVT engine is nicer in a number of ways but it also wants premium fuel for a negligible increase in power. I find basically none of the 01+ interior upgrades to be to my liking. I prefer the green/white on black gauges. A basic line in can be added to the older radios while the 01+ radios require additional electronics. The 01+ seats actually prevented me from really fitting in the car. The earlier seats are less comfortable but they are also somewhat thinner which matters to me. The lack of lumbar support is a real problem but also solved really easily by rolling a towel and placing it into the seat back (harder to explain than actually do). I prefer the 01+ headlights and squared off chin but I don’t like the creases over the headlights nor the pentagon vs more oval like air intake. I also prefer the older tail lights. The trunk light can be retrofitted if you wish. The ‘99 could be had with a LSD and cloth seats if you knew what to look for (in retrospect I’m not as in love with the LSD).

So his opinions are right because they’re his? Nice.
I don’t know how likes the 99-00 seats better. 01+ seats are fantastic unless you’re 6' 3", in which case the extra thickness makes headroom an issue. Then again, if you’re that big, a Miata isn’t really the car for you.
